Study: "TD"ing a Character with Expressions: Automatic Toe Curl
When you were very young you learned to pick up your toes when you walk. Unless of course you still stub your toes all the time..... In general, animators ignore this, because it is a subtle effect, and would be very time consuming to keyframe. But we can do it automatically with an expression on each toe controller. Our character will gradually rotate his toes up as his foot leaves the ground, up to a maximum rotation of 35 degrees. As his foot descends back to the ground, his toes will flatten out to meet the floor.

Affected Element: righttoe.rotz
cond( rightfoot.etrny > 0.2, MIN( 35, ( rightfoot.etrny * 13 ) ), 0 )

Once again we will use a conditional to check whether the foot is off the ground before we adjust the toe. Then the toe will rotate at 13 degrees for each Softimage unit in Y that the foot raises. You may of course adjust this factor to work with your scale and your character. The Min command insures that the toes never rotates more than 35 degrees, which would look freakish.
